NOTE: To work with this BLOX application you will need to be granted access in Settings / Users / Groups. If you do not see this application in the drop-down in the upper-left of your BLOX CMS desktop, or for more information about groups and getting access to different parts of your BLOX CMS admin please see Groups - Recommendations / Best Practices. The site administrator at your location should be able to grant you access, or you can contact TownNews Customer Support by submitting a ticket through your BLOX CMS admin (for more information see Ticket Workspace) or by going to Customer Support. Or you can call 800-293-9576.

You will need to be part of the Syndication Manager group.

Note: The only asset types that will syndicate are articles, images, collections, audio (.mp3), html, link, video (.mp4), and YouTube

Note: Poll assets do NOT syndicate. This happens because each new vote on the poll would trigger an update.

Note: Presentation mode is now copied during syndication. This means galleries and specialty stories can be shared in the content exchange without losing their presentations.

Note: In order for related content items to syndicate both the source and destination sites must configure the exact same related content styles. This setting can be found in Editorial / Assets under the settings panel Related content styles. For more information see Assets Application Settings

For example, if the source site had a related content style called Today in History, you will need to ensure that the destination site has an equivalent style called Today in History in order for that box of information to be transferred.

The following options are now available in the Syndication application:

Option to keep flags/tags/keywords/section in importer. This will allow sites to pick and choose which items they want to keep from the original content, and which items they want to discard.

Show which asset tags (keywords, geotags, sections) are set on the originating site. This will allow destination sites to see items that were set on the original story, and move them over manually. (To keep all items without manual review, use the settings in the importer as described above.)

Setting up the Originating Site

This process starts with the Originating site (site content is coming from). Change your domain to the site you wish to pull from by going to Active Site in the upper right of the screen and selecting the site you want content to come from (you do need to have access to the site to see it in the dropdown). If you have received the webservice key and secret key from the site you can go to Setting up the destination site.

Best Practice: You should set up a different Webservice Key and Secret for every paper you are sharing information with. If at a future point you no longer wish to share information with one paper, you only need to remove that Webservice Key, not reissue keys to everyone else.

From the dropdown in the the upper left choose Settings / Webservice Keys Not sure how to access BLOX Applications? Click here)

Click New from the top left of the Manage Webservice Keys screen.  This opens the Create Webservice Key window. Enter a Name for the key then select Wire for the Modules (which will be listed as 'Capabilities' in the Manage Webservice Key window). Click Create Key when finished.

The New Webservice Key and Secret will then be displayed. This information will need to be provided to the Destination site to create the Syndication channel. Click OK to close the window.

Setting up the Destination Site

Change to the destination site (site content will be going to), this is the site you wish to setup the Syndication channel on. Go to Active Site in the upper right of the screen and select the correct site.

5 - How do I setup a BLOX to BLOX syndication channel.png

From the dropdown in the the upper left choose Editorial / Syndication (Not sure how to access BLOX Applications? Click here).

In Channels click New from the top left of Channels.  This opens the Create Channel popup. Select the radio button for Blox CMS Site.

Click Continue.

Create a Channel Name for the new channel.  Fill in the full Domain Name of the originating site, and the Webservice Key and Webservice Secret from that site.

Custom Properties allows you to Ignore or Import the custom properties attached to the story on the originating site. If you're using a Workflow Process, you can set that in the channel as well.  For a list of custom properties available and how to use them see Editorial Assets Custom Properties.

You can include Default Source. This is the same as Source in an editorial asset.

OPTIONAL - This field can be used for the website to document the original source of the content when it comes from a third party, i.e. AP, value added sources, content exchange, etc. This does not show on the front end of your website by default.

This can be used on the front end with the cms.asset.source module. For more information see Method: cms.asset

This module can only be added by certified customers.

Note: Editing templates and block templates requires Certified Manager (full access). (For information on different access levels see Groups - Access Levels. If you are not certified you will need to contact TownNews Training and Documentation by submitting a ticket through the BLOX CMS admin, or by calling 800-293-9576 and asking for the Training department.

For more information about becoming certified please see BLOX Template - SLA.

Category Mapping

Your publication is always able to assign or re-assign assets from any syndication source to the section(s) of your choice.  To map categories for a channel, click once on the channel to highlight it, then click Category Map from the top of the Channels sub-panel.  The Category map for that channel appears.

To assign a section to unmapped categories or uncategorized assets, simply click on the line to select it, then click Edit

This opens the Select Sections window.

Assets from AP can retain their section assignments when they are imported to your site. However, if you want to change those assignments, you can create a different Category Map by selecting Add.

This brings up the Add Category Map Rules window. Select the section(s) that you want, then click Add Rules.

You also have the option to Import/Export a Category Map (Export creates the .JSON file and downloads it into your Downloads folder and Import allows you to upload a .JSON file).

Once you've made your selections, click Save and they will appear on your Category Map screen.

Note: The next step in this process is create a search of the assets you wish to publish to the front end of your site. For more information see Syndication Search terms and Saved searches (Flex) (Zen).
