Overview

The Banner Ads software is where you create your Ads. This document explains the software in greater detail. There are other applications (ie: Design / Blocks) you use to place the Ads on your site. BLOX CMS has the ability to position and/or utilize Banner Ads in various ways. This includes Infinity Sticky Ads, Infinity Scroll Ads, In-Story Fixed Ads (targeting specific Article Assets), and Automatic Ads (for a full list of these and other Ads, see the Ad Technology section on the Banner Ads Landing Page).

ACCESSING APPLICATIONS

From the drop-down in the the upper left choose Marketplace / Banner Ads...

NOTE: Not sure how to access BLOX Applications? Click here

NOTE: If you have an Ad Blocker enabled on your browser, this application will not open up because the word Ad appears in the application name.

The Banner Ads Admin

The Banner Ads Admin has four areas:

+36
Banner Ads admin
  • 1  Search Terms - This allows you to search for existing ads by changing various query rules.
  • 2  Saved Searches - This allows you to save searches that you will use repeatedly.
  • 3  Search Results - This allows you to create new ads, view/edit position inventory, view/edit existing ads, delete or disable/enable ads, export ads to a CSV file, and search for ads via paging.
  • 4  Application Settings- The Settings in the upper right corner of the screen allows those with CMS Manager rights to Manage Ad Regions and set the DotConnect Sitename (if applicable). Please click here for more information on the Application Settings within the Banner Ad Manager.

Search Terms

+36
Banner Ads Search Terms panel

You can search for assets using the Search Terms at the top of the screen. This has a keyword text box, and eight parameters you can change when performing a search. You can search simply by keyword, or you can use one or more of the parameters to narrow your search.

1  Text - In the Text field you can type/paste a keyword such as a name, or ID number. In the example above, the word "example" was entered as the first search criteria.

INFO: Information in External ID can be searched for from the Text field in Search Terms.

Note: You cannot serach for anything in the Notes field.

2 Status - In the Status field you can narrow your search to a specific status.

NOTE: The Status of the ad indicates whether the ad is available to be used on your site. The status does NOT indicate whether the ad is assigned to a position on your page or not.

  • Enabled - The ad is enabled as long as the current date is within the Start Date and End Date that you can set in the Asset window.
  • Disabled - The ad has been disabled in the Banner Ads admin .
  • Expired - The ad is disabled when the current date is after the End Date that you can set in the Asset window.
  • Wait - An ad is in Wait status when the current date is before the Start Date set in the Asset window.
  • Deleted - An ad is Deleted when you have manually deleted it. Ads cannot be automatically deleted within Banner Ads

3 Type - In the Type field you can select the type of ad you are searching for.

Supported ad types include:

  • iQ
  • Expandable
  • HTML
  • HTML5
  • Image
  • Page Curl
  • Text
  • Video

NOTE: Image sizes are capped at 3MB for all file types.

4 Business - If you are assigning Banner Ads to specific business in Marketplace / Businesses you can select the business as a parameter and search for any ads assigned to that business.

For more information about connecting Banner Ads with Businesses, and the benefits of this, please see doc.

5 Section - You can narrow your search to look for ads that are assigned to specific sections of your website. A section is the tag you assign an article to. It is NOT the URL of the page. For more information on section tags, please see Tags.

6 Position - You can search for ads assigned to specific section, like leaderboard-top1.

7 Start Date - The Start Date parameter is set in a range, so you could search for ads that started, or will start From: March 19, 2015 To: March 21, 2015, for example.

8 Modified Date - The Modified Date parameter allows you to search for ads that someone modified in c certain date range, so you could search for ads that started From: March 19, 2015 To: March 21, 2015, for example.

9 End Date - The End Date parameter is set in a range, so you could search for ads that have or will end From: March 19, 2015 To: March 21, 2015, for example. Once you have set your parameters, click the Search button to search. The Reset button clears the search settings so you can start fresh.

SAVED SEARCHES

Saved Searches is located below the Search Terms . You can save a custom search query for future use in the Saved Searches.

Creating Ad Positions

Before you can create an ad in Flex, you first must create the ad position. There are a couple of different options to create them. You can either create them through the Application Settings , or on a per- URL basis through Page Customization's

Fixed Ad Positions and Sizes

From your Desktop, go to Design / Blocks and open the URL you want to work on. Then expand the Page Customization's on the right (if not already expanded). In the Page Customization's , go to the 'Advertising' section, select Fixed Ad Units. You have three choices under Fixed ad units: Disabled, BasicAdvanced, and Article Only

Disabled will turn off the fixed ad regions.

Basic adds two fixed regions:

  • fixed-big-ad-top: A 300x250 ad region at the top of the right rail. This ad position will be replaced if you are using Google GAM and enabled the Google AMP Ad Region, Google AMP Flying Carpet Ad.
  • fixed-big-ad-top-asset: A 300x250 ad region near the top of an asset page. This ad position will be replaced if you are using Google GAM and enabled the Google AMP Ad Region, Google AMP Flying Carpet Ad.

Advanced includes the regions found in basic, plus:

  • fixed-big-ad-middle: A 300x250 ad region in the middle of the right rail
  • fixed-big-ad-middle-asset: A 300x250 ad region near the middle of an asset page
  • fixed-big-ad-bottom: A 300x250 ad region at the bottom of the right rail
  • fixed-big-ad-bottom-asset: A 300x250 ad region near the bottom of an asset page
  • fixed-impact-top: An impact region at the top of a page that is 1000 pixels wide (Overline will not appear on this Ad Position)
  • fixed-impact-bottom: An impact region at the bottom of a page that is 1000 pixels wide (Overline will not appear on this Ad Position)

Article Only has the following positions:

  • fixed-big-ad-top-asset: A 300x250 region near the top of an asset page
  • fixed-big-ad-middle-asset: A 300x250 region near the middle of an asset page
  • fixed-big-ad-bottom-asset: A 300x250 region near the bottom of an asset page

Other Ad Sizes

  • Pencil Ads: 960px X 30 px
  • Leaderboard Ads: 728px X 90px
  • Email Reach/Newsletter Ads: 600px X 125px
  • Middle/Top Center Ads: 468px X 60px

NOTE: The Long-form article presentation uses the right rail ad regions from Basic and Advanced to display ads in the article asset. If Article Only ads are selected, long-form articles will not have any in-story ads.

e-Edition

  • fixed-edition-top - This ad region is compatible with all Fixed Ad Unit platforms (Blox, GAM, OAS) to be used in e-Editions and is positioned at the top of the River of News.
  • fixed-edition-middle - This ad region is compatible with all Fixed Ad Unit platforms (Blox, GAM, OAS) to be used in e-Editions and is positioned within the flow of the River of News. This Ad, however, will not show up until there are at least two Article Assets added to the e-Edition.
  • _popup - This is a virtual Ad Region that is compatible with all Fixed Ad Unit platforms (Blox, GAM, OAS). It's part of the default Ad Regions that come with BLOX CMS. The popup ad region is only available with ‘Advanced’ fixed ad units, and the max width is 900 pixels.

NOTE: There aren't any size restrictions. However, to be Mobile Friendly, it is recommended to keep the Ads/Ad Regions at 320 pixels wide.

NOTE: For OAS Slot Positions, see click here.

Galleries

There are also ad positions that can be created to insert ads in to galleries.

  • Ads in photo carousels: fixed-big-ad-gallery, a 300x250 region that inserts ads into photo galleries according to the Photo gallery ad insert customization in the Page customizations
  • Ads in paging gallery: fixed-big-ad-paging-gallery, a 300x250 region that inserts ads in to a collection asset in Paging Gallery presentation mode (This is a requirement), according to the Photo gallery ad insert customization in the Page customizations.

NOTE: Both fixed-big-ad-gallery and fixed-big-ad-paging-gallery can be used with Basic, Advanced, or Article Only.

NOTE: Google GAM fixed ads use the Domain URL custom property. If no domain URL custom property is defined it falls back to the ads_GAM_domain site setting. If both are present it uses the URL custom property first.

NOTE: Photo gallery ad inserts will now appear in photo carousels that are placed inline on a story page. Galleries at the top of the page still show gallery ads as well.

NOTE: Gallery slot overlays will not be centered when using the Fluid Layout option. Ads will be left aligned in fluid layout, centered in normal.

OAS uses specific position names that match to our BLOX fixed ad positions. They can be found in the chart below.

For a full list of OAS Position Names, see http://oashelp.appnexus.com/oas143/Default.htm#Ad_Tagging/Position_Names.htm (password protected).

NOTE: OAS has very specific names for ad slots (what they call Position Names.) If the on page code calls for a Position using a name not defined by OAS, no ad will be displayed. Also be aware that OAS Position names are case sensitive: Bottom, Bottom1, Bottom2, Bottom3, BottomLeft, BottomRight, Frame1, Frame2, Left, Left1, Left2, Left3, Middle, Middle1, Middle2, Middle3, Position1, Position2, Position3, Right, Right1, Right2, Right3, Top, Top1, Top2, Top3, TopRight, TopLeft, x01 through x96.

Block Based Ads

You can also create your own custom ad region in the Application Settings (Desktop / Marketplace / Banner Ads). Click here to learn how to Add an Ad Region. You if you don't need to create a new Ad Region, you'll still need to get the name of an existing one for your new Ad Block. Then go to Desktop / Design / Blocks and open your URL.

Note: Region names MUST be all lowercase and cannot have spaces. Use a hyphen (-) to separate words (ie: ad-middle-right). Region names cannot begin with an underscore (_). Doing so will generate an error message.

NOTE: Google GAM fixed ads use the Domain URL custom property. If no domain URL custom property is defined it falls back to the ads_GAM_domain site setting. If both are present it uses the URL custom property first.

Once you have your custom region created, you can add one of the following blocks to display ads. Your choices are:

When you have your block selected, you will need to add the name of the region and position number where you want the ad to show.

+36
Banner Ads Regions

NOTE: You will need to set your Fixed Ad Unit Provider to the correct provider to use those regions. Click here for more information on Fixed Ad Unit Providers.

Page Customizations

Use Page Customizations to set the settings for and manage Ad placements and types of fixed Banner Ads on your site.

+36
Advertising page customization panel

1  Fixed Ad Units: This is covered above and are used to provide static ad regions.

2  Fixed Ad Unit Providers: This allows you to set whether you are using BLOX, Google GAM, or OAS/DX Tags for your provider. Click here for more information on Fixed ad unit providers.

3  Smart Ads: This moves fixed ad units from the sidebar and inserts them in the story page at the extra small breakpoint. For more information on Smart Ads, see the Page Customizations documentation.

NOTE: Currently, this is only available with the Google GAM Platform. A future software release is planned so it can be used with BLOX Ads.

NOTE: On Mobile Devices (Tablets, Smart Phones), Banner Ads will load once when the page loads unless you check the Refreshable check box on the Ad Region. Otherwise, scrolling will not keep reloading Banner Ads as you navigate on these devices.

4  Network ID (GAM/OAS): This code identifies your GAM or OAS setup. Click here for instructions on finding your GAM Network Code.

5  (Domain / SitePage) Prefix: This is used if your BLOX site's domain name in GAM or OAS is different from the value you use for your ad server. Click here for instructions on finding your GAM Domain

6  Include a Index/Home Page Slug: This allows you to include an indicator to the Ad Unit that identifies index pages (home page) uniquely from asset pages. By default this field is left empty and no identifying slug is added to index pages. Some possible values might be Index or Homepage (e.g. /NetworkCode/Domain/URLpath/IndexSlug). If the Ad Unit Provider is OAS and the Value is set to "_", the Index Slug operation will be disabled at this URL and below.

7  Photo Gallery Ad Insert: This allows you to set a number of photos viewed before ads are inserted into a Photo Carousel

8  Overline: This will set an Ad Overline text for BLOX Ads only.

9  Ad Blocker Detection Actions: This sets the action that will be taken when a page hits an Ad Blocker.

10  Interval Ad Refresh: This page customization defines if and how often an Ad will refresh on your site when its in the view port while a user is engaged with your site, thus generating more Ad Impressions.

11  Lazy Load (GAM): Lazy Load is a software feature, when enabled, BLOX will serve lazy loading ads when the ad region becomes viewable on all devices a user views a website on.

12  Ads on Article Pages: Change this from Default to Automatic Ad Placement. This Enables Automatic Ads.

13  Paragraphs Between Automatic Ads: Enter the number of paragraphs you want the Automatic Ad to be positioned after (ie: 3 = After every third paragraph, the Automatic Ad appears). You may want to consider increasing this number if you have smaller paragraphs (ie: one to three short sentences).

  • Paragraphs Between Automatic Ads - Enter the number of paragraphs you want the Automatic Ad to be positioned after (ie: 3 = After every third paragraph, the Automatic Ad appears).  You may want to consider increasing this number if you have smaller paragraphs (ie: one to three short sentences).

NOTE: This number must be a 1 or higher. You cannot put a 0 (zero) or the ads will be adversely affected.

14  Automatic Ad Block ID: Paste the Block ID number into this field that you copied from the Widget / Embed Code.

15  Taboola: This is an Advertorial Content provider for your site. Contact Customer Service if you want this set up on your site.

NOTE: For more information on Taboola see What is Taboola and how does it help my site?

Positions

Three concepts that Admin users should be familiar with are Regions, Positions and Ads. A Region is a predefined area on a template in which to place ads. Each template of your site will have numerous ad regions. A Position goes within a Region and is what you assign an ad to. Position names are created from the names of the Regions in which they reside. For example, if a Region was called rail-top and was set to have four Positions, the positions created would be called: rail-top1, rail-top2, rail-top3 and rail-top4. For more on setting up Regions see: Banner Ads Application Settings.

To view all the positions on your site as well as the ads assigned to them, click on the Positions button in the toolbar of the application.

+36
BannerAdToolbarMenu

This will open the Positions window:

+36
Banner Ads Positions

Finding Positions

This window consists of a listing of all the ad positions on your site. In the bottom right corner of the you can see the total number of ad positions on your site and in the bottom left corner of the you can page through the list. The position list is broken into columns showing the Section, the Position Name, the Active Ads assigned to the position and the Width of the position. Any of these column headings can be clicked on to sort in ascending or descending order.

To view only those positions that currently have ads assigned to them, click on the Status dropdown in the top right corner of the window and select Assigned.

Manage Positions

To view the ads that are assigned to a position you can either double click on the ad position or select it and click the Manage Position button in the top left corner of the . This will bring up a new window allowing you to view ads that are assigned to this position. If there are currently ads assigned to that position, you can view the Status of the ad. The available status types are Enabled, WaitExpired, Disabled, and Deleted.

  • Enabled - an active ad with a start date before the present day and end date after the present day.
  • Waiting - an ad with a start date after the present day.
  • Expired - an ad with an end date before the present day.
  • Disabled - an ad that has been disabled.
  • Deleted - an ad that has been deleted within the previous 7 days.
+36
Banner Ads Manage Positions

To add another ad to this position, click on the Assign button in the top left corner of the window. This will bring up another window that allows you to select ads currently in the system and assign them to this position. To remove an ad, select it and click the Remove button in the top left corner of the window. This will not remove the ad from the system, just from this position.

NOTE: While you can assign as many Ads to a single Ad Position as you want, the more you assign, the less effective an Ad Campaign will be. You can always create as many Ad Positions as you want, but it is recommended to not assign more than 10-12 Ads to an Ad Position. For some Ad Campaigns, this is fine but for more "targeted" campaigns, it is suggested to limit the Ads assigned to the position.

Ad Weighting

By default, if multiple ads are assigned to the same position, all will auto balance to display an equal amount of time. For example, if you have four ads assigned to a position, each should display 25% of the time. If you wish for one ad to display more often than others you will need to type in the percentage of time you would like ads to display. To do this, click in the Percent Column in the row of the Ad you wish to weight. Enter the percentage desired (you'll do this from the Manage Positions window - click on the Manage Positions button on the toolbar).

You could do this for one or all of the ads. Once you have entered the percentage, you must click in the Locked column to lock in that amount as the system will automatically attempt to auto balance all percentages when saved. Repeat these steps for any other ad weight you wish to change.

Once you are done editing your ad weights, make sure to click the Save button in the bottom right corner of the window and then close the window.

Placing Ads on Another Site (Show External js)

Some customers have other sites on which they want to be able to control ads. For example, maybe you have your photo galleries on another site or have another site for blogs. Ads on these sites can be controlled from your BLOX CMS Admin.

If you want to control ads on another site or domain, select the position in you wish to place on another site and click the Show External js button in the top left corner of the window. This will bring up a window with the JavaScript code for that position. Copy this code and send it to the third party site to insert on their template in the position in which you want the ad to appear.

Settings (Video Ads)

To edit the Settings on a position, select that position and then click the Settings button. This will open the Settings window where you can configure the settings for that position. These settings are for video ads.

The Settings button offers the options of Video Display, Roll Type, Initial Volume, and Autoplay.

  • Video Display - this dropdown menu offers two options to determine whether the position should display the video ad itself (Stand alone player) or attempt to embed the video ad into a pre-existing video player on the template (Embed into player).
  • Roll Type - these options will only function if the Video Display is set to Embed into player. The available options of when the video ad will be rendered are Pre-roll, which will display the video ad before the video content, or Post-roll, which will display the video ad after the video content.
  • Initial Volume - the original volume in which the video ad will play on the site. The default is 50, but other options include 0 - 100 in increments of 10.
  • Autoplay - if this box is checked, the video ad will automatically play when the Web page is loaded.

NOTE: Checking the Autoplay box will increase your site's bandwidth. Be sure to refer to your TownNews.com contract to view the amount of bandwidth your site is allowed for free per month.

Creating a New Ad

Click on the New Ad dropdown in the top left corner of the main to create a new ad.

+36
New Ad
  • iQ: used for national advertising. Contact the Ad Ops team if you would like this set up on your site<.
  • Expandable: used for ads that the front-end user can expand or collapse. The .png, .jpg, and .gif files types are used for the Small and Large image fields.
  • HTML: used for text based ads or ads containing HTML code. Some advertisers may provide you with code for their ad, in this case you would paste the code in as an HTML ad.
  • HTML5: (New) lets you upload zipped HTML5 Ads for display on BLOX CMS sites. These zipped files follow the IAB Guidelines for HTML5 zip upload format. With the HTML5 Ad type, you can upload a Zip file containing multiple HTML files, folders, separate CSS or JavaScript files, and all included Binary files.
  • Image: used for ads that are image files. Acceptable file types are JPG, GIF, and PNG.
  • Page Curl: used for corner page curl ads that the user can mouse over to un-curl and view the full ad. Requires JPG files for the Small and Large image fields.
  • Text: used for simplified text based ads where all that is supplied is the text of the ad and a link.
  • Video: used for standalone video ads. The only acceptable file type is MP4.

NOTE: Popup: a form of online advertising intended to attract web traffic or capture email addresses. Popups generally open in a new web browser window over the top of the existing window. Popunder: are like popups, but they open a new browser window under the active window.

NOTE: Currently, the following Ad Types, Expandable, HTML, Image, Text, Page Curl, and Video are supported in Flex using the Popup and Popunder Ad Regions.

NOTE: For viewports that exactly 320px (for instance iPhone5), ads will now be forced to display even if the region is smaller than the ad. For example: If a 310px wide ad is placed into a region that is 300px wide, BLOX will now force the ad to display, filling the screen with the ad.

BEST PRACTICE: If you wish to have a Banner Ad that will run a single day only, you will need to set the Start and End Date for that single day. Unless an Ad is set to run immediately, all Start and End Times of the Ads are midnight to midnight on their respective dates. This occurs simultaneously.

iQ Ads

iQ Ads are used for national advertising.

NOTE: This Ad Type is only available if you have TownNews.com iQ as a part of your contract. If your are interested in adding this to your site, contact your Regional Sales Representative or contact Customer Service - (800) 293-9576. For more information on TownNews.com iQ, check out this Two Minute Video).

+36
iQ Ads

To add a new iQ ad, type in a Name and select a Size.

The Notes and External ID fields are optional, just like with the other types of ads in Ad Manager. The Start Date and End Date fields are optional. Positions, Related, and Other are on the right side and include the same options as with all other ad types.

iQ Ad sizes include:

  • 160x600 (Wide Skyscraper)
  • 300x50 (Smartphone Banner)
  • 300x250 (Medium Rectangle)
  • 300x600 (Half Page Ad)
  • 320x50 (Smartphone Wide)
  • 728x90 (Leaderboard)
  • 970x250 (Billboard)

iQ Ads can be pulled in-line to a story and the text will wrap around the ad.

Expandable Ads

The Expandable Ad interface is different from other ad types as it requires the upload of an Original Image and an Expanded Image. It also has fields to manage the expand/collapse actions such as Transition Direction, Transition Speed, Overlay Content, Open at start, and Auto Expand Time Limit.

The Original Image field is where you will upload the JPG image of the collapsed ad view.

The Expanded Image field is where you will upload the JPG image of the expanded ad view.

Note: The Original Image and Expanded Image do NOT have to be the same size, but best practice would recommend that they are.

Transition Direction - This is the direction that the larger image will emerge from the smaller image. Auto (default) allows the template designer to choose the best direction for the file size and location. Possible values are Auto, Left, Right, Up and Down.

Transition Speed - This determines how fast the larger image will emerge from the smaller image. Auto (default) allows the template designer to control the speed. Possible values are Auto, Slow, Medium, Fast, Instant.

Should the ad overlay the site content or push it aside? Setting the Overlay Content to Auto (default) will allow the template designer to determine the correct method. "Yes" will make the ad sit on top of the site content. "No" will make the ad push the site content aside. This will only work when 'Transition Direction' is set to 'Down'.

Auto Open - When should the ad automatically open? Possible values are Never, On Load, On Hover, On Load or Hover.

Auto Expand Time Limit (seconds) - This is the number of seconds that the ad will stay open if it was activated at the page load and not by the user. Zero (0) seconds will leave the ad expanded forever until user action is taken to collapse it. The default is 0 seconds.

The rest of the fields are the same as an image ad. See Image Ads for more information.

Expandable Ad Best Practices

  • Left/ Right animations should be the same height.
  • Top/Down animations should be the same width.
  • "Overlay No" will only work when 'Transition Direction' is set to 'Down'.
  • "Overlay No" should be used for the pencil ad only, in some browsers this setting doesn't work properly.
  • Consider the ad size, region, and expanded size when determining at which breakpoint the ad should show and what transition direction should be used. For more information about breakpoints, see Flex templates, Responsive design, and Breakpoints documentation. For the CSS classes used to control block behavior in breakpoints, see the CSS class documentation

HTML Ads

The only difference between creating an HTML ad and an Image ad is that with the image ad you upload an image and with an HTML ad you will paste or type in code or text to appear on the site. Also, HTML ads have a Preview button to allow you to see how the HTML ad will display.

+36
HTML

Select Preview to see how the ad will display on a live site.

The rest of the fields are the same as an image ad.  See Image Ads for more information.

NOTE: To allow HTML ads to have clickthru tracking add the following syntax to your HTML: [% tracker_url("http://example.com") %]. In this example, any clicks that go to example.com will be recorded. Multiple clicks can be supported by adding a second instance of the above code with a different URL.

HTML5 Ads

HTML5 lets you upload zipped HTML5 Ads for display on BLOX CMS sites. These zipped files follow the IAB Guidelines for HTML5 zip upload format. With the HTML5 Ad type, you can upload a Zip file containing multiple HTML files, folders, separate CSS or JavaScript files, and all included Binary files. HTML5 Ads are like mini web pages, and all required files and code should be contained within the zip file which is uploaded to BLOX Ad Manager. These Ads are then un-compressed and stored in a way where they can then be shown within an iframe on a BLOX CMS website.

NOTE: HTML5 Ads will display differently based on the browser the user is using.

+36
HTML5 Ad Type Edit Window
  • Name - (Required) Give a descriptive name for the HTML5 Ad.
  • Zip File - (Required) Click on the Upload button to navigate your network or computer and select the .zip file you need. An index.html file is required to be a part of the .zip file. If the Header Tag of the index.html file has a <meta name> tag with ad.size in it and has the Ads Height / Width parameters (ie: <meta name="ad.size" content="width=300,height=250">), you can set the Ad Size field to Auto Detect. If the index.html file also has the ClickTag variable in it, you can leave the Click Tag field empty as well. When creating an HTML5 Ad, the software searches the index.html file for these two elements. If detected, the Ad Size and Click Tag fields are automatically populated. If they are missing, you need to manually populate those two fields.

  • Ad Size - See Zip File above. There are multiple Ad Sizes you can select. Default is set to Auto Detect.
  • Click Tag - See Zip File above. This is the URL that the HTML5 Ad will link to. Click Tags are tracked when a user clicks on the Ad.
  • Notes - Any notes entered do not appear with the ad on the front end. They are for administrative purposes only (ie: purpose of the ad, sales person, items discussed with the client, etc.).
  • External ID - This is not automatically generated by the system. This is for administrative purposes only (ie: Account number of client or Ad Tracking number, etc.)
  • Start/End Date - Set the Start/End Dates for the Ad to run. If an End Date is not set it will run for eternity AND the system will not be able to Balance Automatically the Ad Impressions.

Image Ads

Clicking on the Image option will open the New Asset window:

NOTE: Banner Ad Images need to be .jpg, .png, or .gif file format. BLOX CMS will NOT convert other images into these formats.

NOTE: Animated Gif Banner Ads must not exceed 1 MiB (1024 bytes) in size. They will become corrupt.

+36
Image Ads

Pressing the Upload button in the Image window brings up an Upload file popup which allows you to browse your computer or local network for the desired image. Once uploaded, a preview of the ad will display in the window. View/Edit allows you to crop and resize your ad, although it is recommended that you do that before uploading it.

Name is the title for the ad (internal, or Admin view only). It is recommended that you use the advertiser's name and/or ad position and size in this field so that you can sort by that information later. Example: Joe's Used Cars - Leaderboard.

Link URL is the URL that the ad will link to when clicked on. Generally this would be the advertiser's web site but could also be a PDF or print ad that you have uploaded to your site.

NOTE: The ability to choose this function has been removed from all ad blocks in Marketplace / Bznner Ads. ALL ad types will open in a new window if there is a Link URL.

The Notes and External Id fields are optional. The Notes field might be used to type in the rate at which the ad was sold, the salesperson who sold it, or any helpful information about the ad. External ID would be used if you had another program you were using to track the ads and wanted to post the ad ID from that program here.

Start Date and End Date allow you to specify when the ad will go live on and come off the site. If you do not specify Start Date and End Dates, the ad will default to starting immediately and having an end date of January 17, 2038. The End Date is defaulted to 2038 to prevent ads from coming off the site if the administrator doesn't enter or doesn't possess a specific end date.

Text Ads

The text ad interface is very similar to the Image ad, except for the Text field. The text field is where you can enter simple text for an ad that is text only and does not contain any media (images, video, etc). Text ads will appear with a "Advertisement" flag above them.

Video Ads

The Video Ad interface is very similar to the Image Ad, except for the Upload button. The Upload button allows the user to upload the video into the admin (only MP4 formats are supported. Other formats will be converted to MP4), where you can also play the video to see how it will display on the front end of the site. Video Ad types are supported in the default Ad Regions.

Popup Ads

Popup Ads are created differently from other ad types. Popup Ads are created based on position, not on ad type.

To create a Popup ad, first select the type of ad you wish to use from the dropdown. Follow the above instructions on creating that particular ad. You can use any ad type, except those that change size, like Expandable ads or Page Curls. The maximum width and height is 900 pixels.

Once you are done, click on Tags, select Positions and click Add.

+36
Add Positions

This will open a new dialog box. Under Region, select _popup.

+36
Popup ad position

From there, select the Section where you want the Popup Ad to appear, and click Assign.

Note: A Marketplace / Banner Ads ad must be assigned to a Section. A section is where an article of other asset is assigned. It is NOT a URL or page on your site. For more information about settings up sections see Tags (Flex) (Zen).

+36
Assign popup

NOTE: Every once in a while you may run into an error message when trying to use the _popup position. You will simply need to use the _popunder ad position instead.

NOTE: _popup Ads are responsive on mobile devices and are supported in all BLOX and Google GAM Ad platforms.

To close a popup ad, you can either click off to the side, or you can click the "X" in the upper right corner.

Popunder Ads

Popunder Ads work just like Popup Ads. They also are based on position, not on type.

To create a Popunder Ad, select the type of ad you wish to use and follow the instructions above. Just like Popup Ads, these can be any type but those that change size.

Once you are done, click on Tags, select Positions and click Add.

Page Curl Ads

NOTE: Page curl ads require using a specific page curl region. If this region is not active on your site you may need to submit a ticket to Customer Service to request it be activated.

The page curl ad interface is very similar to the Image ad, except for the Small Image and Large Image upload screens. The Small Image button allows the user to upload the small image (only JPG format is supported) that will appear in the page corner. The Large Image button allows the user to upload the large image (only JPG format is supported) that will appear when the user performs a mouse-over on the ad.

NOTE: The page curl Small Image expects the image to be 75x75, while the Large Image is looking for 500x500.

Flash Ads in BLOX Ad Manager are Not Supported

Web Browsers no longer support Flash. In following industry standards, BLOX CMS has removed all Flash Ads Types in Banner Ads. HTML 5 ad types are supported in BLOX CMS. All Flash Ads that exist in your BLOX CMS Admin are still searchable in Banner Ads but are disabled from working on your site.

Tabs

In your Ad window, on the right side, there are three tabs for Tags, Related, and Other.

+36
AdTabs

Tags

Tags has three sub-sections, Positions, Keywords and Geo Targeting.

Positions: Positions is where you will assign positions to your ad. To assign the ad to one or more positions on your site, click the Add button under the Positions title. This will bring up the Positions window:

+36
Positions

NOTE: Positions that are not suitable due to width or height constraints are automatically filtered from the selection list. This prevents a situation from occurring in which a large ad displays on your site incorrectly in a position that is meant for a smaller ad.

Check the box(es) next to the position(s) to which you want to assign the ad.

  • Use the Section dropdown to filter the position list to only positions within the specified section (these are based on section tags, not URLs).
  • The ROS section stands for Run of Site, meaning that if assigned to that section the ad will appear in the specified position on every page of the site (unless overridden by a Section specific assignment).
  • Use the Region dropdown to filter the position list below to only positions within the specified Region.
  • Additionally, any of the column headings (Section, Position, Active Ads, and Width) can be sorted by ascending or descending order.
  • Narrow down the positions even further by sorting by Status. The options for sorting under Status are All or Assigned, with the latter displaying the number of active ads assigned to a specific position.

Click Assign after choosing the positions in which you want the ad to display.

Once you have assigned positions you'll be able to see them in Tags / Positions.

+36
Banner Ads tabs

Select an assigned position and click Remove to remove it from this ad. Click on the position and select Edit Position to view other ads that are assigned to the position and the percentage of time that each ad will display. More information on weighting is covered in the Positions portion of this document.

NOTE: You can skip specific URLs for your ROS ads by using the ROS Section Exclusions in the Application Settings

Keywords: Select the Keywords and click on the Add button to add keywords to your ad. You may enter or remove keywords which are searchable in the Banner Ads Search query. This can be useful in tracking a specific ad campaign. For example, if you had a special holiday ad campaign you could place the keyword 'holiday' on all applicable ads and then search and report on those specific ads.

Note:  Using a Keyword in ANY Banner Ad type, the Ad will ONLY show up on a page within your site that has that same Keyword.

Geo Targeting: This feature allows an ad to have a Zip Code and Proximity Setting. If a zip code is entered, then BLOX attempts to detect the front-end user's locations and will only display the ad if the front-end user is within the specified proximity from the center of that zip code (for example, within 10 miles of the center of zip code 61265). To enter multiple Zip Codes, separate them with a comma. Therefore, you can place several ads in the same ad region, all from different community businesses, and only the ad relevant to a reader's location will display. A reader in a different community will see the ad targeted to their location.

Related

WARNING: You need access to Business Directory in order to relate an ad to its owning listing. To grant access, set up permissions in Users/Groups.

Related displays the Business. If your site has Business Directory installed, you will be able to add businesses that directly relate to that particular ad. To add a business relationship in this, click Add then search for and Add Selected Business when you find the relevant business. If the business you are looking for does not exist in the directory, select New Business in the Find Businesses window to create it. Click Save before closing the ad window. Once the new business has been saved, you will be able to search for the business in the main Ad Manager search by refreshing the main . Choose Add Selected Business when the desired business is selected.

If a business no longer relates to that specific Ad, you can click on the Remove button.

Other

In Other, you can set Ad Restrictions, set Dayparting Schedules, record Sales information, and view Revisions.

Restrictions

This allows you to schedule an ad by impressions. An ad impression is basically an ad view. From this, you can specify a maximum number of Impressions Per Day, Month, or . For example, if 5000 impressions per day are set for an Ad, it will not show anymore that day after 5000 impressions are recorded. It will display the next day when the impression count resets. You can also specify a Total, which would be useful if you sold your advertiser a set number of impressions.

Total Impressions will do two completely different things based on the Start Date & End Date of the Ad. If the scheduled run dates for the ad is LESS THAN 2 years, the Total Impression Limit will divide & calculate theTotal Impression Limit value over the run length of the ad. If the scheduled run dates for the ad are MORE THAN 2 years, the Total impression limit will be a simple, hard limit from the start date of the ad.

Once the Ad reaches a set number of impressions, it will never show on the site again, unless the impression limit is removed or increased. That said, there are two ways to manage/control the Ad Impressions: Balance Automatically or As Fast As Possible.

Balance Automatically is disabled until a Start Date and End Date is set. This setting tells the system to attempt to distribute the Ad evenly across the lifetime of the Ad (the time between the Start Date and End Date). This method of Ad serving will check hourly for Ad performance, and will ramp up or slow down the serving rate of the Ad to attempt to ensure the Ad lasts throughout the advertising campaign and meets its impression goal if possible.

Note:  Ad impressions are never exact and you may end up with slightly more or less impressions, due to traffic conditions and the fact that the performance check only occurs once per hour.

As Fast As Possible (default) setting will tell Ad Manager to serve the Ad a quickly as possible given its current impressions, weights and rotation. This is the equivalent of having an Impression Cap without an End Date. The Ad will serve as quickly as possible even if an End Date has been set.

Note:  There is a risk in that the Ad may hit its Impression Cap on the second day of the advertising campaign.

Note:  Ad statistics are calculated by Blox on an ongoing basis. The Statistics are updated every hour, on the hour.

Note:  If an Impression Goal is set for an Ad, and if you choose Balance Automatically for that Ad, Blox will remove the Ad if its Over Performing (think of it as 'Throttling Back") and let it show again once it is On Target. This behavior does not "disable" the Ad, it only hides it. A Disabled Ad does not get measured.

Performance is where impressions are recorded. Information recorded is:

  • Total Served - How many Impressions (views) the Ad has.
  • Impressions Left - How many are left to be served.
  • Remaining Days - Days left in the advertising campaign for the Ad. If the period is over two years, it will show as unlimited.
  • Daily Average - Percentage of the daily impressions.
  • Daily Target - Based on the setting selected, the daily target is calculated for the life of the advertising campaign.
  • Status - An indicator on whether the Ad is performing on target, behind schedule, or over performing. Each status is color coded.

User Limit allows you to limit the number of impressions an individual user sees in a specified time frame. The Views field requires a numeric value, and the dropdown menu next to that field needs to be set to minutes, hours, or days. For example, you may want to make it so that a user only sees an ad two times every five minutes.

Note:  The Monthly Impression Limit is calculated on the calendar month, not a 30 day period. So some months such as February or March will spread the monthly impressions over 28 or 31 days, rather than 30.

Note:  The 'User Limit' is tracked by the user's cookie history. If we see that you've been served an ad, via your cookies, we will restrict that ad from displaying for you again. We do not restrict by IP address.

Note:  If you remove the End Date and leave the Monthly Impression Limit, the ad will serve out the impressions as soon as possible (given weighting and rotation of other ads). If you remove the impression limit and leave the end date, it will serve the maximum number of impressions possible during that time (given weighting and rotation of other ads), and will end at that time regardless of impressions.

If you have a Daily Impression Limit, it also will not try to average the impressions over the month. The combination of the two limitations (end date and impression limit) tells Ad Manager that you want to spread the impressions over that time period.

Best Practice Remove the impression limit, keep the end date, and make sure it is the only Ad - or weight the Ad really high the Ad Position.

Dayparting Schedule

By default, the ad is set to run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. However, by using the Dayparting Schedule you can schedule an ad to only display during a specific time frame on certain days. To set a Dayparting Schedule, make sure the Enable Dayparting box is checked. This will allow the days of the week listed below to be modifiable. You can Set Schedule For All Days or you can set a different schedule for each day of the week.

WARNING: If the Enable Dayparting box is checked and no schedules are added, the ad will not display on the front end.

+36
Dayparting

When you either Set Schedule For All Days or set a schedule of individual days, the following Edit Schedule window will display.

+36
Edit Schedule

You can add a schedule for All day, Morning, Lunch, Daytime, Evening, or Custom.

1  Select a schedule and choose Add Schedule. Depending on the schedule you add, a time frame may appear below in the main.

2  Alter the Start and End dates by clicking on the time; you can either manually enter in a time or select one from the dropdown menu. Having schedules that overlap is acceptable.

3  To delete a schedule, select the red Delete button.

Repeat this process to add more schedules either for an individual day or for all days.

Sales

The accordion tab entitled Sales displays Billing Type, Billing Rate and Sales Person.

+36
Sales

None of these fields are required, but they need to be filled out if you plan to run advertising reports on a regular basis, as some reports are based off of these fields.

  • Billing Type is the terms on which this ad is currently being billed. Choose either Free, Monthly or by CPM (Cost Per Thousand Impressions) if you choose to fill out this field.
  • If you select CPM or Monthly the Billing Rate field will be available to enter.
  • To assign a Sales Person to this ad, click the Select button and search the for user in your current user database. Click the Remove button if you want to remove the sales person.
  • Place a check in the box if this is a SWAT ad. Enter any notes relevant either about the SWAT ad or for the SWAT team. The ability to search for SWAT ads will be added to the Search Terms in a future addition.

NOTE: Users that are assigned as the Sales Person for the ad will be emailed daily notifications within a week of the ad's expiration.

Revisions

The Revisions accordion will show a history of who has edited the ad or changed it status and when. It does not allow the ability to go back to a previous version of the ad.

Click Save and Close once you are done editing your ad. The ad will appear live on the site within 5 minutes.

You can save and close in different ways:

Click Save which will save the changes you've made, and then click Cancel which will close the popup.

Or, click the down arrow next to Save, select Save and Close.

BannerAdToolbar

Edit Ads

To edit an existing ad you can double click on it in the main or you can select it and hit the Edit Ad button in the top right corner of the main. This will bring up the ad information in the same window covered in the Creating a New Ad portion of this document.

Duplicate Ads

If you need to make a copy of an existing ad and apply changes to the copy, you can do so with the Duplicate button. On the Search results page, select the ad you wish to copy and click the Duplicate button in the upper right corner. This will open a copy of the ad. You will have to edit the name line, as it defaults to the same name as the duplicated ad with the word "copy" after it. Edit the new ad and select Save and Close.

You can save and close in different ways:

Click Save which will save the changes you've made, and then click Cancel which will close the popup.

Or, click the down arrow next to Save, select Save and Close.

Delete Ads

To delete an ad, select it in the main by clicking on it and then clicking the Delete Ad button in the top right corner of the main . This will bring up a warning box asking if you are sure you want to delete the ad. Click Yes if you are sure.

if you don't want an ad to display on the site but may use it at a later time, it is not a good idea to delete it. Once an ad is deleted, it is gone from the system. A better solution would be to remove all the positions from the ad or Disable the ad. This way it will not show on the site anywhere but is still available to the site at any time.

NOTE: Deleted ads will remain in the system for seven days after the date of deletion. To access them, select Deleted from the Status bar in the Search query. To re-activate a Deleted ad, select the ad and then choose Enable Ad from the top menu bar of the Main panel. Confirm the Enable Ad selection in the pop-up box by clicking Yes.

Disable Ads

To disable an ad, select it in the main by clicking on it and then click the Disable Ad button in the top right corner of the main panel. This will bring up a warning box asking if you are sure you want to disable the ad. Click Yes if you are sure, or No to cancel. Disabling an ad is a good way to save the ad for future campaign use and not have to re-create it later. This will change the status of the ad to display as disabled in orange text. Disabled ads will not appear on your live website, but are still available for editing/enabling in the admin.

Enable Ads

To enable an ad that was previously disabled, select it in the main by clicking on it and then click the Enable Ad button in the top right corner of the main panel. This will bring up a warning box asking if you are sure you want to enable the ad. Click Yes if you are sure, or No to cancel. Remember that even though an ad has a status of enabled, it will not appear on the site unless it is assigned to an ad position and has current start/end dates. Ads that are enabled will be displayed in the status column in green text.

Export Ad Information to CSV

The Export CSV button located in the top right corner of the main allows you to export the contents of the Main to a comma-separated value (CSV) file. This CSV file can then be opened in a spreadsheet program. This can be useful for viewing the number of Impressions and Clickthrus for each ad. (How are ad clicks tracked in BLOX?) The Export CSV button will only export what is currently in the Main panel. For example, if you only wanted to view ads for a certain advertiser, you would want to first do a search for that advertiser in the Keyword search, then click the Export CSV button.

Sort Ads

By default, ads in the main are sorted by Start Date descending. This means that the most recently created ad will appear at the top of the list. Any of the column headings within the main can be clicked on and you can select Sort Ascending or Sort Descending to reorder everything in the main based on that column.

NOTE: For information about product charges or billing please contact your regional sales rep. If you are not sure who your sales rep is, or you do not have their contact information, please contact TownNews Customer Support by submitting a ticket through your BLOX admin (Support / Ticket ). For more information, please see the Ticket Workspace (Flex) (Zen) doc or by calling 800-293-9576.
