Overview

The Banner Ads Manager is where you manage the advertisements on your web site. From within this application you can search for ads using specified criteria, create new and edit existing ads, view position assignments and change weighting, disable or enable ads, and export ads to a CSV file.

Note: Admin users must be granted specific access to the Application settings panel.

The panel on the right side allows a user to create and modify the ad regions and general settings for the Banner Ad Manager. This area can be accessed by selecting the gear icon at the top of the Banner Ad Manager.

Application Settings Panel

Settings that control the addition, deletion, editing, disabling or enabling of ad regions can be found under the Application Settings Panel in the upper right corner of the Banner Ad Workspace.

Any settings made within this panel will then apply to any and all banner ads (of the specified type) throughout BLOX in both Admin and Live views. The panel is comprised of three sub-panels: Manage Ad Regions, General Settings, and ROS Section Exclusions.

Manage Ad Regions

Manage Ad Regions is where the ad regions are set up and maintained for the site. For most sites, these are set up by TownNews.com during the site setup process. In here, you can Add, Edit, Disable, Enable, or Delete Ad regions.

Note:  Adding a fixed region through this interface will not automatically create the region in the templates, though regions created this way can be used in ad blocks. You will need to have UTL certification access in order to create a fixed new region within the templates. Contact our Customer Support department if you need help creating a new fixed region within the templates.

Note:  Some ad regions, such as the page curl region, may be inactive by default on your site. You can submit a ticket to Customer Support to request that a specific ad region activated.

Add an Ad Region

To add a region, click the Add button in the upper left corner of Manage Ad Regions.

There are four fields:

Region Name:  Fixed ad region names must match those set in templates.

Fixed Ad Regions:

  • fixed-big-ad-top
  • fixed-big-ad-middle
  • fixed-big-ad-bottom
  • fixed-big-ad-top-asset
  • fixed-big-ad-middle-asset
  • fixed-big-ad-bottom-asset
  • fixed-big-ad-gallery
  • fixed-big-ad-paging-gallery
  • fixed-impact-top
  • fixed-impact-bottom
  • fixed-edition-top
  • fixed-edition-middle
  • in-story
  • infinity-scroll-block-id
  • _popunder
  • _popup
  • _preroll

For more information on fixed ad regions, or how to create an ad position (region) in BLOX, see How do I create an ad position in BLOX CMS? (Flex only)

Note: Region names MUST be all lowercase and cannot have spaces. Use a hyphen (-) to separate words (ie: ad-middle-right). Region names cannot begin with an underscore (_). Doing so will generate an error message.

Positions:  The maximum number of ads placed in this region at one time.

Max Width:  The pixel width restriction for an ad to be placed in this region.

Refreshable: Toggles the refreshable ads capability in the region. If multiple ads are assigned to a Refreshable position, the ads will rotate on a page refresh event.

Note:  The Max Width setting will prevent ads wider than the max width from being assigned to the ad position. As an example consider a 320px width ad. This ad cannot be assigned to the in-story ad position from the graphic above. Nor will the in-story ad show up when searching for ad positions to assign this ad to.

Note:  If multiple ads are assigned to a Refreshable position, the ads will rotate on a page refresh event. If the Slideshow: Carousel block is set to Auto Slide, the block's scroller will not trigger a refresh event for ads in a region set as Refreshable.
If the Photo Gallery Ad Insert option is enabled in Page Customizations it will disable the refreshable ad option for that URL.

Click Save when your ad region settings are made.

Edit an Ad Region

To edit an Ad Region, highlight the region you would like to edit and click the Edit button.

Max Width:  This it the maximum pixel width the ad can be to be placed in this ad region.

Refreshable:  Toggles the refreshable ads capability in the region. If multiple ads are assigned to a Refreshable position, the ads will rotate on a page refresh event.

General Settings

There is one options under General Settings: Traffic Smoothing.

+14
general settings panel

Under General Settings is Traffic Smoothing. This option uses traffic data from your site to help smooth out the distribution of limited ads. This helps ads with limits not use all its allotted impressions during early high traffic times so there will still be some available during low traffic periods.

ROS Section Exclusions

Sometimes there may be certain URLs that you want to skip for your ROS ads. With the ROS Section Exclusions you can now cleanly avoid certain URLs.

Note:  Even though you can see the ROS Exclusions in the Banner Ads software, the Zen templates will not recognize any ROS Exclusions selected.

To exclude a particular URL or set of URLS, simply check the boxes of the ones you want to skip. Then click Save.
